Media and Policy Analysis

Overview

The COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020 in Canada and the WHO declared that it was no longer a public health emergency in May 2023. The first part of this project looked at records from this era to the present in the form of news media coverage and government policies.

American Association of Geographers Conference

In March 2025, I presented the preliminary findings of the media analysis in Detroit, USA as part of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting. I discussed how the type of coverage of grocery store workers changed from celebrating essential workers to condemning grocery employers profits at the expense of their staff members’ well-being.

Canadian Association of Geographers Conference

I presented at the Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG) annual meeting in late May 2025 on the preliminary results of the policy analysis portion of this project.

Future Outputs

Besides conference presentations, I plan to publish my findings in academic journals. I hope to spark conversations about whose voices are being heard and who is missing in media and public policy.
